The discourse regarding Islamic accounting is increasingly being heard along with the development of Islamic entities. Sharia accounting is needed for recording financial transactions carried out by Sharia entities, both Islamic financial entities and non-financial Sryariah entities such as zakat institutions and waqf institutions. This need has been accommodated with sharia accounting standards by the IAI Sharia Accounting Standards Board (DSAS-IAI) which includes the presentation of financial reports for sharia entities.
The lack of a master study program that offers a concentration in Islamic Accounting has encouraged Master of Accounting, Faculty of Economics and Business, Universitas Gadjah Mada (Maksi FEB UGM) to develop a concentration in Islamic Accounting. The opening of this new concentration is one of the responses of Maksi FEB UGM to the increasing need for professional accountants and educators who understand Islamic financial transactions and have competence in the field of Fiqh and Muamalah Accounting.
To educate the public about Islamic accounting, Maksi FEB UGM in collaboration with the Accounting Laboratory of FEB UGM and the Indonesian Accountants Association (IAI) Yogyakarta region held a webinar “Opportunities and Challenges of Islamic Accounting Development”. This national seminar was presented by various resource persons who are experts in the field of Islamic accounting, bringing with them four different perspectives: Islamic financial entities, Islamic non-financial entities, regulators, and educators.
